Women and Gay Romance

Over the last few years, I've come across a number of discussions debating the role of women in gay or male/male romance fiction and erotica. There's no question this genre has grown a lot in the last few years, due in large part to women readers and writers. I was surprised to learn quite a few people are not happy about this.

The phrases I've heard tossed around are things like “culture appropriation” and “gay fetish” to describe the interest (presumably) heterosexual women have in gay romance. I've held my tongue when these debates have happened, partly out of self-interest (as a writer, reputation online is more important than ever these days) and partly because it's difficult to weigh in when I see both sides of the issue.

Of course, I don't feel like I personally fetishize gay sexuality. I like to read and write about all kinds of things, a great many of them having nothing to do with sex. But I can imagine how gay men feel when it comes to women looking at pictures and videos of men together and reading their comments. To be objectified like that, even if it's not about you, feels dirty. I've read comments that made me want to distance myself from the woman who wrote them. I've had women give my books low ratings because there wasn't sex on every other page, or what sex was there was tame compared to a lot of other books out there. It's disheartening to realize there are people who come across like that's all they're interested in – many of them may not even realize it. Naturally, this results in men who hate how women are taking up such a large part of “their” world – to the point of being openly hostile to readers and writers just for being a part of this group. Some of them feel any woman who reads or writes gay romance or erotica is wrong, just because.

I liken the situation to the major political parties in the US. There are extremes on both sides who feel strongly about their position and they can be the loudest when it comes to disagreements. But, as in politics, even people within the groups sometimes don't agree with how the extremists represent the whole.

I'm not an innocent when it comes to this particular issue. I've done and said quite a few things I'm not proud of and I can't imagine the kind of impression I've left on gay men I've spoken to, either online or in person. I used to say things like “that's so gay” because I was young and silly and it never occurred to me to question why I or others said it or how it may make someone feel. I'm more aware of how I speak to people now and I've largely changed the way I think. I'm cognizant of how connected I am to the world around me and the world I've aligned myself with, not because I'm a woman most presume to be heterosexual, but because I sometimes still feel I'm on the outside looking in. I want people to respect me and my opinions and know when they speak to me I am genuinely interested in them and not attempting to correlate them with a gay stereotype in the media. I don't know if thinking this way now makes me more mature or less self-absorbed. I like to think it makes me more open to getting to know people, across the board. I like to think it makes me more attuned to how people respond to me. I like to think my attitude will allow people (read: gay men) to get to know me as a person and not assume I'm a hetero woman ogling them as entertainment.

But I'm just one person. There are millions of other women out there with their own variation of this story. I can't speak for any of them.

Where am I going with this?

A little over a year ago, I got an idea for a story about a woman who gets to experience what it's like to be a man for a day. Naturally, because of what I write, I thought it would be fun if she tried to have a sexual experience with another man. I asked around and the majority of women I spoke to agreed: If they could do it, a lot of what they'd want to experience would be sexual, either by themselves or with another person. Once I knew I was going to write this story, I realized I couldn't do it without linking it to a larger argument: What would happen if this woman had a lot of preconceived ideas about gay men that were challenged by her firsthand experience?

http://sarawinters.net/envy.htm

It was difficult writing this story. There were a few times I flat-out quit because I was putting so much pressure on myself to get it just right, to prove certain points. I suppose I was writing it in lieu of responding to all those arguments I kept seeing online. I pushed myself and finally wrote a story that explains, in small part, how I think some women feel when they're reading and writing these stories. This is by no means an excuse for some comments and behavior. It's just one possible version of reality for some people wrapped in a story.

Is the main character Jamie really me? No. Sort of. She's a more extreme, sillier version of the me from three years ago. I learned a lot of the lessons she has to learn in the book a long time ago and I'm better for it.

I don't expect people to love this story. I expect it to get people talking, for better or worse. I'm still trying to convince myself I'm doing a good thing. It's not a romance. It's...general fiction/fantasy, for lack of a better description. I think I'm prepared for the various reactions the story will get. Maybe.

This is not an easy to read story. It's social commentary. It's a thinly disguised critique of my social group, groups we interact with, and a segment of our environment. I may hurt feelings. I may hurt my chances of selling books in the future.

I care about those things, but I still had to tell my story. If you're curious how I did that, click here to read the beginning and find out where to get a copy.

still alive, etc.

I've been a bad, bad girl. I know, shocking right? I didn't mean to neglect my blog for nearly eight months (almost long enough to have a baby), but, life happens. I don't really have any excuses. Actually, that's not true. I have a long list of excuses, but nothing I want to type here. (Like Google screwing with the posting format on blogger. I swear, they buy every website I like and systematically take away everything I like about it. Hello, feedburner.)

So, what have I been up to? Writing, writing issues, work, therapy, being more active in my critique group, lurking on facebook, neglecting twitter, more work, sprained my ankle, moving, an epiphany or two, less writing, broke my ereader, wondering why I haven't updated my blog, chastising myself for not releasing any new stories in nearly a year, crying over ER bill, putting too much pressure on myself to write, trying to get back into the groove of writing, whining a little about my absent muse, a little (okay a lot) vodka and tequila, watching Supernatural, watching Bleach (loving the anime) and generally waffling about life.

Sounds fun, yes?

Anyway, I'm going to try to post again... hm, let's say before the end of the year. Can't guarantee I'll stick to it otherwise.

So, I have a kinky side

Yeah, kinky (mind) = me. I'm sure the people reading this who know me will be shocked to read that. Shocked, I tell you. And yet, I am the most boring person when it comes to adventurous pursuits. All my creative energy goes into my stories. Some of it is more adventurous than others. And goodness knows I've written some things I have no practical knowledge of (in spite of that the fact I've had three different people who don't know each other say I'd be a good dominatrix).

Right now I'm reading Whip Me, Beat Me, Make Me Write Hot Sex! in an attempt to get a more factual basis for things I've written about in the past and at least one book that's in the works in the Savannah series. The book is fairly straightforward so far, and I'm hoping it goes into more detail later. (Shut up. Yes, you. No laughing in the corner there.) I'm all about the educational books. Especially if they have pictures.

my year in retrospect

It's been an interesting year for me. I've done less writing this year than last year, but I feel like I got more accomplished. I finally got a game plan for my Savannah series nailed down. Sort of gave up on my writing/critique group (though I have hopes it could come back). And I published my favorite story.

I know, I know. Any writers who are reading this are probably screaming that I can never pick a favorite one. It's like telling my other babies they are unloved. Well, maybe. It's not that I love it more than my other stories, it's just my current favorite. It's the one I put the most blood and tears into this year. It's the one I drove myself crazy getting as close to perfect as I could. And it also got the least attention. (Cue the whining about underrated artistry or something along those lines.)

That's probably my fault. Because an early (shorter) version of The Strength of a Man was available last year, I didn't do a huge promo push when I released the full version on ebook and paperback. And I meant to take out some advertising and do some giveaways, but I got caught up with other things. One of the drawbacks to self-publishing is that I have to manage my time between writing and promoting - social networking can be a gift and a curse. But I love this book and I want more people to read it.

So, this is it. I've decided to give away as many copies as I can between now and Christmas day. My baby is now my gift to you and whoever you choose to share the links with: Smashwords (use code RR73V) and All Romance Ebooks.

Next year, I hope to get a lot more done, both in number of stories published and in feeling more accomplished. In the meantime, I think I'm growing as a writer with every new story. I hope you will take that journey with me.

BTW, if any of you are stuck for ideas for Christmas gifts, honest reviews are my favorite gift.

Winding down and gearing up: a ramble

So, what's going on with me you ask?

NaNoWriMo was... interesting. Meh. I write at a snail's pace these days, so no, I didn't get 50,000 words in November. I did add nearly 26,000 to story, which is more than I've written on it since February of last year altogether. (Yes, I know that's a really long time, but technically I just wrote the idea down so I wouldn't forget it and actually started on the story this year before I put it down to write the first in the series.)

In other words, the second book in the Savannah series is coming along. See the little widget down the page there? --> I'm sure it's going to be longer than 50,000 words, but that's a good indication of how it's going so far. I'm in love with this one (aren't I always?) and I'll start posting excerpts as soon as I get a finished first draft.

What else? Rereading Daron's Guitar Chronicles. Falling in love with Daron's story all over again. Annoyed with Ziggy. Remembering things that happen in later parts of the story as I'm rereading and getting excited because I'd forgotten some of the details. Oh, and people? We're being blessed with Volume 4 ebook! Get it. Now. You like m/m? Music? You want your life to be sucked away while you catch up with the rest of the readers and anticipate the next chapter? Buy the ebooks, the paperbacks, audiobooks or just read the series online. (Oh, but take my advice, buy the ebooks from the website. You'll get more fan satisfaction out of that.)

I did mention Daron and company inspired the serial I've been working on for eons. I'll have to give the story a shoutout in mine somehow. Ooh, maybe my characters can be Moondog Three fans. Let me write that down somewhere so I don't forget...

give me strength (oh look, good reviews!)

It's been a colorful summer. Not sure I need to get into all of the drama (a good deal of which was the voices in my head arguing about stories), but things are looking up. I'm getting reviews in for The Strength of a Man, which is awesome. The story goes into some heavy territory, so I was worried about how it would be received, but sometimes I worry for nothing (please remind me of this after I release my next story).

After the great reviews from The Armchair Reader and Hearts on Fire, I was sure I'd reached my quota. Then I remembered genies grant three wishes, so I got another gem in response to my novella. Check out the review from Outlaw Reviews by clicking here.

I've also been getting some great responses to See Right Through on Amazon. Three five star reviews. Wow. I hope people are this responsive to the next in the series. Lee's story will be finished...okay, I'm not crazy enough to give a date. lol I'll keep updating. I did make significant progress on it this week. Apparently, Lee may not be satisfied with a novella length story, so the next in the series will probably be novel length.

Just a reminder: you can find buy links or read samples for all my stories (that aren't free) on my website, sarawinters.net.

new stuff and free stuff and linky stuff

Yeah, I keep meaning to update my blog, but...I'm saving my words for my stories. Yeah, I know that's not an excuse. Well, it is, but not a good one.

Anyway, what am I doing now? Getting ready to release another erotic short story. Yeah, I've been doing quite a few shorts the last year or so, but my longer projects are in various stages of completion so I like to stay busy with the short stuff in the meantime. This story is a (much better) rewritten version of something I published in 2006. I'm really excited about 1. because it's smoking hot! and 2. because it's the first male/female story I've put out since...I'm not even going to guess what year that was. It's fun to get back to where I started, writing male/female erotic romance. I'm looking forward to seeing what people will think of it.

Speaking of awesome, people are actually responding to See Right Through on Amazon. I've gotten a couple of amazing reviews (yay) and it's being downloaded a LOT. If you're curious, you can get the novella for free from there, Goodreads, Smashwords and a number of other sites. Because it's free, you don't have to register an account to download it from Goodreads or Smashwords, but you do need an account to leave a review.

Want to help a great cause? Try GoodSearch. For every legitimate search you conduct, you can raise money for the charity of your choice. I use my account to benefit The Office of Letters and Light - the nonprofit behind ScriptFrenzy, NaNoWriMo and a number of programs for young writers. If you'd like to help them, you can use my link or register an account, find their name on the list of charities and make sure your efforts go towards helping them. The search engine is pretty effective and it's an easy way to help a charity that you can do every day.

the voices in my head have a plan

Greetings, oh readers (and others)

Updates! I finished my Love is Always Write story. The title is See Right Through and it'll be up...whenever. lol I'll post an excerpt later and I'll shout from the rooftops when there's a release date. The truly exciting part? I found a way to tie this story with a series I've been working on for a while, so not only will the first (25,000 word) story of my new series be free, the others should be coming out within the next year or so. I'll throw a couple more free short stories in between the novellas as I release them, but I'm really excited about this series. Especially since I get to end the whole thing with Filled With Stars - my supercomplicated drama.

In other news, I've committed myself to yet another thing. Shocking, I know. I've finally gotten the serial story off the ground, but I really want to have more of that written before I start posting.

I'm off to finish writing my To Do list and then start scratching stuff off of it. Hopefully, I'll get a lot accomplished today.

More news when I have it.

new idea happy dance

What's been happening with me since I fell from the blogosphere? (That's a weird word, isn't it? Yeah.) Let's see. There's a few things going on in my particular section of the planet.

1. I'm still working on my online serial. I want to have the first section (ebook) finished before I go live with the first chapters, but I'm really excted about it. If anyone wants first crack at giving me feedback, I'm always looking for fresh eyes from avid readers.

2. Remember that superawesome event and anthology I participated in for the M/M Romance group last year? It's on again. This time I'm writing a sweet love story set deep in the south. Ooh! I was inspired recently (like about twenty minutes ago), to make this story the first in a series I've been planning. Now I'm excited about this event in a completely new way. Can't wait until the stories start getting posted.

3. I just mortgaged my life to get my laptop fixed. So I'm now getting used to Windows 7 and being able to type without fear that my laptop will die in midstroke. Yay. I may even do some goofy promo vids with my webcam...as soon as I get over how much I hate being on camera. Tequila helps with that, right?

4. Holy crap, I love Fuck Yeah Gay Kisses. I have found my new favorite distraction while writing. That, and staring at hot pictures of Adam Levine. Do we need anything else in life?

The thin (panty) line between erotica and porn: freedom of speech edition

To anyone whose known me for more than five minutes, it's not a secret that this is one of my favorite rants. For those not in the know (or who felt that blog entry was tl;dr), I've been ranting for years about innocent *snort* erotica writers being painted as pornographers. (Again, I have nothing against porn, just against the producers of either being mistaken for one another.) So what's got my sexy Victoria's Not So Secret undies in a bunch?

Recently, paypal decided to put the kibosh on their services for websites (booksellers and such) that sell so-called obscene material. This could be anything from booksellers who host YA stories with sexually active characters to writers like me who have free fiction on their blogs and websites with a paypal donation button. Now, I'm not a big fan of reading about the barely legal stepdaughter seducing her horny stepdad and three of the neighbors (or anything remotely close to that), but to each their own. I know as a business, they have the right to restrict their service any way they want to, but throwing a ginormous obscene blanket over a lot of erotic material is not the way to go about that business without pissing off a large number of people.

If you didn't read that other blog entry (which is long, but definitely worth the read), the gist is paypal is threatening booksellers to stop selling certain stories or lose their services and have their other credit card options in jeopardy as well. A little extreme for what's at stake here. Limiting the ability to buy these types of stories is not going to stop them from being available, just making it harder for writers to offer them on legitimate, safe websites that don't do not nice things with your credit card number. And where the eff do they get off? *ahem* They're not restricting the obscene content label to just stories with illegal acts, like bestiality, but bdsm and pretty much anything with graphic erotic content is liable to suffer from this blackout.

What does this mean? Well, recently, my favorite online bookseller All Romance Ebooks has sent out a memo to publishers alerting them to some changes coming to the site. If you visit the site now, the erotica section has been split into "erotica" and "erotic romance" and they now reserve the right to delete stories for violating their new publishing content rules or for no reason at all.

Now, I get why they've decided something had to be done. It's a romance site that has recently been flooded with a number of overpriced, fairly graphic titles and I know for a fact they've gotten complaints from readers. I'm completely okay with them separating those from the romance novels that most of their long time readers come for. What I strongly dislike is feeling like any or all of my stories have to meet someone else's criteria (A sex to story ratio? A suitably bland cover?) to not be considered obscene. I don't like that my entire publisher account could be deleted because I have a story that doesn't have the main characters skipping off into the sunset together at the end, because some of my characters merely want to have sex with one another and walk away, because at some time, someone might get offended. Maybe. Possibly. In order to spare the stories in my account that I've published for other writers the possibility of my account being frozen, I deleted four stories yesterday, none of which are technically "porn". What's killing me is I don't know if the change at ARe is only because of paypal or if there is going to be a crackdown on erotic writing all over the internet and this is just the beginning of the censorship.

And yes, while I do not love sharing "erotica" websites with stories that I think belong in the "Letters to Penthouse" category, there are some great stories (with actual character development and clothes and stuff) that are suffering from these changes. There are writers vowing to boycott paypal whenever possible and there is the very real possibility that we're all going to lose money, and readers will lose quality products from reputable sources, because some people are throwing a huge prude blanket over our work. It sucks. I can't think of another way to describe it other than as a sucky situation that's probably going to get worse before it gets better.

And there's not really a lot of alternatives to paypal are there? So, now what?

dissenting voices

I'm always unsure of my writing, but that's only a part of the problem. Even when it's good (or great or just the voices in my head high on caffeine), I can't ever be sure. I can't be sure people will read it the way I want them to (how do I mass program random readers??). I can't be positive I've expressed myself in a way that is clear, used words that evoked the right emotions at the right time or left no room for questioning where my story and characters are going without beating people over the head with the facts as I see them.

I am a doubter.

I don't know what to say, who to ask, how many times to proofread before it's right. I don't know when too many words are cluttering the page or when I'm not saying enough to say it just right. When is it right? When does it fall short? When is it perfect for me? For anyone? Is it always just short of capturing that feeling for everyone or just the one who reviewed? What makes the difference between three stars and four? Four and five? A one star rating for not being porn or a five star rating for not being porn? Who decides what's fair in a review or unfair to ask of reviewers or overstepping as writers or constitutes "personal" comments in a review?

Are writers too sensitive or reviewers not sensitive enough?

All things to ponder as I contemplate putting a piece of my soul out into the world again.

the fascinating life of the introverted writer

So, so excited now. Yesterday I just about finished another chapter (bringing me up to six plus the prologue) for my online serial. I also found some great pictures to represent the main characters. Eh. Not sure it's a big deal to other people, but it helps me to have some visual aids when I'm writing. The exciting part is that every picture fits exactly how I think the characters look. The voices in my head have faces now! Yes, I am silly. I embrace it.

What else is going on? Thinking about reviving some more of my old writing ventures. I have a few short stories that could use a new shot at life and a novella that I've been meaning to finish rewriting for some time - I might end up doing that one as an online serial as well. Not sure about it, though. That story was...hot. I'd never written that much sex in one story (versus nonsexual content) before then and haven't since. My first girl on girl interaction (thanks to helpful tips from a lesbian I was friendly with), and my first love triangle/potential menage. Hmph. Maybe I should get on that and the planned sequel.

Or, you know, finish the dozens of projects I already have going.

Ooh, have you seen the hot boy graphics I added to the front page of my website? Sexy, right? If there are any photographers (or mighty cute readers) who'd like to add a photo, I'll happily accept donations.

Adventures of an Internet Ninja

What have I been up to the past few weeks? (Besides writing. I think we all know the voices in my head never shut up.) Trying to make my website all fancysexy so potential readers of my ongoing serial can find everything easily. No, you haven't missed anything. I'm using the term "ongoing serial" to describe a story I haven't finished and haven't started posting yet. What I'm working on is setting up a subdomain of my website just for this story and getting the posts to show up all pretty.

Well, mission partly accomplished. After reading several tutorials (and drinking untold gallons of extra strong tea), I managed to get the wordpress software installed where and how I need it. Yay! Bonus points for not throwing my laptop across the room in the process. So, now what? I have to figure out to fix this issue with the posts.

Basically, every time I create a new post, the post id number should go up by 1. What I have discovered is every time I edit a post that's already been created, the next post after that is off by one number.

For example, say I post the first five chapters of my story and discover a typo in chapter four (there is a strong likelihood of this happening). Once I edit the post, that should be the end of it. But when I create the next chapter, the post id will automatically become seven instead of six. Bad, Wordpress script! Bad! Why does it do this? This is an internet mystery that has yet to be solved. (Seriously, I've found people complaining about this on the help forum going back as far as 2005.)

So, my choices are 1. to edit the database manually, post by post, every time I have to edit. 2. take the post id number out of each permalink, potentially confusing readers who may be using that to make sure they're reading the chapters in sequence, 3. take the post id out and make the number a part of the post title or 4. never, ever make a typo (or don't correct them if I do).

Number two seems the easiest solution, yes? (*sigh* Or three.) Annoying, but easy. But...but...I want it to look perfect! Without extra effort! (Insert various levels of whining and a little frustrated trinket throwing here.) Alas, I have not figured out how to make this thing work without my nontechie self having to screw around with the database after every edit, potentally screwing things up in a way I won't know how to undo.

Someone save me. Or find me a help post that, you know, helps. I'll give you cookies?

I am a NaNo slacker (and other writing news)

Apparently, I'm not meant to do NaNoWriMo this year, as I wasn't last year. I would say it's because I already have too many stories going on and really have no business starting another, but the truth is...I started another one yesterday. LOL My muse (also known as the collective voices in my head and their ringleader) likes to get excited about new story ideas. I swear, I finish everything. Eventually.

That said, I am debating two online serials: one, the story I started for NaNoWriMo, and the second, a continuation of my short story First Impression. Yeah, the short story I swore I wasn't going to write any more on no matter how many people hated how short it was.

See, here's the thing. I was never sure if I was going to continue it because of how I was inspired to write the story. I was emulating several short stories (and one online serial) about band members in relationships. The most recent inspiration came from my reading of Conquest by S. J. Frost. All of these stories have stuck with me for some reason, but I didn't want to write my own longer version because I don't want to unconsciously recreate any aspect of those stories. I want my idea to be as original as I can make it. Given how much I loved those other stories, this could be an issue. Especially if (when, ha!) I write my serial. There's a big difference between admiring what other writers have done and basically rewriting it with my characters as stand-ins for theirs. Gotta think about the direction of this one before I get too far into it.

The Starting Over expansion/sequel is taking on a life of its own. *sigh* This is a good thing because it means moar gud sturytime! but I didn't see any of this coming. I feel like I should have seen more potential for this story and its characters. Sometimes they do take over and the authors are as surprised as the readers. I thank (blame?) my beta readers for pointing things out to me. It helps to have voices other than my muse in my head.

So, more sexytimes, much more writing ahead and yesterday I got the coolest idea for a book cover for an upcoming novella. Thank goodness for photoshop tutorials!

Whoever is working on adding three more hours to the day, please get on finishing that, kthx.

crisis of inspiration

I suppose I do one of these little whining posts every few weeks now. Shall I start with something more positive, then? Yes. I'm going to start posting flash fiction every week. I haven't picked a day yet, but I'm going to try to stick to it once a week, 100 words of awesome fiction. So far, all of the ones I've written have been male/male (and HOT!), but that may change. Or not. I guess it depends on reader reaction.

My current crisis involves critique. At the end of the day, I love knowing what people think of my writing. Good or bad. If good, I need to know what I'm getting right so I can repeat it (the ego boost doesn't hurt either). If bad, I need to know why. Reading harsh reviews can hurt like hell, but after I'm done crying, I need to know what didn't work for people.

This is what I tell myself when I'm not upset.

Lately, I've been feeling like everything I write is wrong. I've been second-guessing character development, plot, even if the story makes sense. This isn't helping my overall writing ability. I've been in a kind of holding pattern for most of the year, wondering why some people seem to love my stories and others make me feel like I'm wasting my time and theirs. And there's a few people I think should be supporting me but aren't and I'm stuck wondering if the reason is because they don't believe in my writing.

I've tried putting all of this out of my head. After all, it's depressing. When I'm depressed I can't write. Or what I write sucks. Which makes me more depressed. Circle of bad writing cycle.

It's hard to clear my head of these things. I can't resist reading reviews because I've been posting my stories online since 2000 and I'm kind of addicted to the feedback. But I know I need to write the stories that appeal to me and find the right audience. But how do I find the right audience when I feel like my stories always fall short in some way for a lot of people? What am I doing wrong? What's not funny or sexy or romantic enough? What characters don't hold their interest? If someone says they "loved" or "really liked" the story, why did they only give it three stars? Why don't more people leave reviews when they rate?

Not having these answers bugs me no end, especially when I'm at a low point. Every time I feel like something isn't working, I try a new approach, hoping, wondering if this will be the type of story that'll appeal to more readers. I'm not even sure what I'm doing anymore. I may be losing my writing style in the vain hope of trying to please everyone.

I think what I need is to get away from this notion of writing for as many readers as possible. If the stories are good, they'll come, right? Right?? So, how do I know when they are? I used to know that, or I thought I did. And now, all I know is I'm stuck.

How's that for writing motivation?

serial writer

I am a serial project starter. Really. I think I have a problem. I get ideas by the ton and next thing I know, I'm working on half a dozen novel at once with a few more on the backburner. I'm not the only one. (Though she probably doesn't look at her ongoing projects with a sense of dread that they will remain unfinished. I'm actually a little jealous of her organizational skills, but I digress...)

My newest project? An ongoing web serial. When I first started writing fanfiction in 2000, I became mistress of the neverending story. Part of that was because I was receiving instant feedback, so my first completed novel ended up with several involved subplots and finally clocked in at 120,000 words. The sequel (never finished) came in closer to 60,000 of a projected 80,000. Much shorter without the reader feedback. Another story (which has it's own blogspot) remains incomplete at 80,000 words, though I may finish it one day.

So, learning from my previous experience, I can totally do this. Granted, with those other stories, I had a vague clue where it was going (the third being the most mapped out, so I can go back to it easily) and a lot of feedback as I wrote. This one I'm going to attempt during NaNoWriMo this year, so I'll be writing at a fairly steady pace with only the faintest clue what might/could/will happen. I only know a little bit about the three main characters and that there's magic involved. I'm reluctant to do too much story planning because NaNo works better for me if I don't preplan everything (plus it keeps me from starting early), but I'm kind of worried about writing an urban fantasy with no idea what's going on. I don't even know what city the story will take place in. But maybe this will all be a good thing. Maybe I can use the epic fantasy to channel my many unused story ideas. Or maybe I can just write without overthinking for once. Ha. We'll see.

organized chaos

My brain is a mass of things I want to do, things I need to do and things I must do to survive. Writing is on all of those lists. The good thing, I have a job that allows me enough free time that I can write if I'm not too distracted. The bad thing is, I am almost always distracted, tired or too frazzled too get anything done. And the ideas never stop coming.

I've revamped my personal To Do list several times over the past few weeks. It keeps getting longer. Good, because it means I haven't lost my ambition no matter how frustrated I get with my progress. But it sometimes makes me feel...overwhelmed? Yes, overwhelmed with all of the things I have planned for myself. I want to be one of those writers with a huge back catalog of books and shorts stories, a web coming, an ongoing web serial, five blogs, a dynamic website and a facebook page that gets updated several times a week. Basically, I want to be the me several years from now. I'm doing it in baby steps now and that's not always enough for me. I know the pressure to produce is about 75% internal and I'm trying to ease that and not focus on the 25% that makes me feel inadequate with what I do produce.

Today is the first step towards that. I am going to cut off my internet (I can hear the voices in my head screaming already) and try to do nothing but write for four hours. I haven't done that since...I can't even say when. It's been years. Too long. Long enough that I'm sure my muse is hiding in the back of her closet somewhere, nervous about me coming over and staring her down because she hasn't seen much of me lately. We don't have a confrontational relationship because I'm always afraid of scaring her off. After that incident where she didn't speak to me for seven months, I decided that fear was better than forcing her to work. She works for me, not the other way around! So, today she'll have to gather her minions and finish telling me the story we started in June. I want this sequel done. Yesterday. I will not take no for an answer.
